Vision
The world is changing. Our previously somewhat
limited and predictable horizon has given way to a society embracing
the entire globe. Change brings about new
opportunities, inevitably change also means threats
to existing paradigms and commerce. Economies are turbulent,
cost reduction is paramount. All this has forced a re-think on
the way business decisions are made. Information technology is deemed
to be an essential determining factor when making decisions. Crucial
business processes such as marketing, financial management and
logistics are totally dependent on just in time information reaching
relevant executives. Central to all this is the question whether most
companies receive this executive information in a timely
fashion and indeed in a suitable
format.
Furthermore, there has been a shift from high volume to high value
business practices. Customers are less predictable, loyalty no longer
guaranteed. The classic value chain has changed from a production
driven process to a demand driven approach. Are all customers of
interest? All these factors pose new demands on modern day management
and decison making. Information about processes and customers can be
leveraged so as to aid the company’s competitiveness. In short, the
ability to successfully make critical business decisions depends more
and more on the availability of relevant information and the use of
information technology.
So, it has become the more important to ensure the
liability of the information supplied. External parties (government,
consumer organisations, etc.) are imposing strict rules for proving
that the information supplied is actually current and correct. Think
about regulations like Sarbanes-Oxley (SOx) and Basel. These
regulations impose heavy requirements on the loading and transformation
procedures of your datawarehouse and ask for advanced
control-mechanisms.
The newest trend in BI is the use of BI in the sector of
Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Several investigations show this,
see for instance : BI-Enquete.
Not surprisingly as at one hand these
companies collect more and more information that they want to use for
strategic and operational purposes like expanding their business, lower
the production cost and improving their customer service. On the other
hand the cost of hardware and BI specific software are decreasing
(think about Open Source BI software that are really
maturing).
And so we also expect a growing market share of Open
Source BI software, especially in the SME and governmental sector. And
we are not the only ones having that expectations as this is also
expected by leading research companies: "By 2012, Adoption of
Open-Source BI Being Used as an Enterprisewide Standard Platform Will
Triple" --Gartner Research.
In this sense also the concept of SaaS can be mentioned.
Especially for companies willing to use the advantages of BI but not
having a big IT-department, SaaS might be a good alternative. The SaaS
provider loads the data in its own created database(s), provides all
parties with the information (reports, feeds) needed from the data
warehouse, builds- in all necessary control mechanisms, and maintains
the databases. This is a very appealing concept voor cooperations (e.g.
brokers, drugstores) that would like to share information on common
clients or about the sector as a whole or with respect to individual
performance, but that don’t have or don’t want to have a full-grown IT
department able to set up a datawarehouse and maintaining it.
The importance of Business Intelligence is increasingly gaining
momentum. Companies that embrace Business Intelligence will be best
poised to survive in the long term. For those that don't, it
is questionable whether they will survive in even
the medium term in our modern, dynamic and competitive global
village.
